Coaches Notes, Rain and Train

The past couple of weeks have been wet ones in East Central Illinois.  Most of our meets have been cancelled and our training schedule has been altered.  I like to have the season planned out well in advanced and set aside days of hard training and days of recovery and non impact workouts.  My intensity chart has been thrown out and I am taking our training to a week to week or a day to day plan.

Yesterday was our scheduled last strength workout of the year.  A ladder workout on grass ranging from 1000's to 400.  When I got to STM  there was a major thunderstorm rolling in.  So, we changed the workout to a YMCA non impact day and pushed the workout back a day.  We have a three day window to get this workout in, so I am not worried about it.   The rain has actually been a blessing for our training,  we have gotten in more quality workouts than we would if we had been racing.

At this point in the season, two weeks till sectionals, we are cutting down on our wieght training and strength exercises.  I am not a big taper guy,  we will taper some the week of State but not too much.  I know that big tapers can leave runners flat.  I hate to stop doing what we do that got us where we are.

I have planned our season to have a nice quality meet the Saturday before Sectionals and not any other fast racing in the last two weeks of the season.  We are getting down to the nitty gritty of speeding up and running fast.  This is the part of the season that I love.  Letting the guys loose and seeing what they can do.  I wish everyone a great end of the season and can't wait to run on the blue.
